What does the agreement between Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN provide for Ukrainian grain exports

The United Nations, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine on Monday issued the long-awaited terms of the process that will apply to commercial ships handling Ukrainian grain and fertilizer exports through the Black Sea, according to a document seen by Reuters.

“The parties will not launch attacks against commercial vessels or other civilian ships and port facilities participating in this initiative,” the document said, according to the news agency.

The UN-brokered agreement to restart Ukrainian exports through the Black Sea is overseen by a Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in Istanbul made up of Turkish, Russian and Ukrainian military officials as well as UN officials.

According to the agreed procedures, the Joint Coordination Center will provide information on the planned movement of ships through the maritime humanitarian corridor, which will be shared with Russia, Ukraine and the Turkish military with the ultimate goal of avoiding incidents.

“No military vessel, aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) shall come closer than 10 nautical miles to a commercial vessel passing through the maritime humanitarian corridor, excluding the maritime space of Ukraine,” the document specifically states, according to Reuters.
