What is the G20?

Rome hosts the G20 on 30 and 31 October. The representatives of the major world economies gather at the EUR in an armored weekend, 5,300 reinforcement units will watch over the territory. The Chinese and Russian leaders, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, who justified the absence with the problems related to the pandemic will be missing. They should follow the work on video. Rome is already the American president Biden and like the other leaders he will make preliminary meetings on Friday, before the official opening of the summit on Saturday.

WHAT IS THE G20
The G20 is a group of twenty 20 nations. It includes the richest countries on the planet, some emerging economies and international institutions. At the G20 it is represented over 80% of world GDP with 60% of the population. There is 75% of global trade, but also an estimated 75% of greenhouse gas emissions.

WHO IS PART OF IT
There are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, the European Union. Spain is invited and there are leaders from major international organizations, from the United Nations to the International Monetary Fund.

FROM WHEN IT EXISTS
The G20 was founded in 1999 as a meeting that brought together finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. It has therefore been meeting for about twenty years. It was born following an economic crisis and changed in 2008 when, in the midst of the financial crisis, US President George W. Bush invited the leaders of the G20 to also coordinate politically by bringing together heads of state and government. Since 2010 it has been an annual event hosted in turn by one of the member countries.

HEADQUARTERS
Italy hosts it for the first time. The appointment is in Rome. The venue is The Fuksas Cloud at Eur. The Roman one is the first face-to-face meeting in two years between the leaders. The 2020 G20 took place virtually in Saudi Arabia. The first day is Saturday 30th and ends with a dinner at the Quirinale. On Sunday the summit continues starting with a walk in the center of the capital.

AND TOPICS
The main themes are climate change (reduction of methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels), the pandemic and the global vaccination campaign, the economic recovery after the coronavirus, the increase in energy prices and the global minimum tax of 15% for multinationals, perhaps the most achievable result. Among the foreign policy issues is Afghanistan in the foreground, but also the Iranian nuclear negotiation and the management of the China-Taiwan issue. The goal of the G20 is to bring at least 40% of the world population to vaccination by 2021, even if this percentage is geographically disproportionate.

ABSENT
There will be no Chinese and Russian presidents Xi Jinping and Vladmir Putin due to a pandemic (they say). They should intervene on video. Also missing are the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, the Saudi King Salman, the Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. There will instead be the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who will then miss the Cop26 in Glasgow where many of the others will pass instead. Speeches from Queen Maxima of Holland and Prince Charles are expected.
