The US Coast Guard confirmed on Thursday (22) the death of passengers on the submarine Titan, which had been missing since Sunday (18).
Searches using so-called ROVs continue to be carried out by the US Coast Guard, now with the aim of finding the bodies of the five people who died in the accident.
The ROV is a remotely operated vehicle that allows intervention in deep waters, having been crucial in finding the wreckage of the OceanGate submarine.
ROVs are very large and powerful, equipped with lights, cameras and technology that make them “built specifically to go to these depths”, Welham told the CNN this Thursday (22).
The search vehicle is attached to a vessel that remains on the surface as it descends to the bottom of the sea. Once an ROV reaches the deep sea, the ship’s pilot needs to orient himself to its precise location.
“They will then start a search pattern,” explained Welham. “It’s pitch black down there, so the lights are going out in front of him, and the camera will record everything that happens in front of (him).”
“The pilot of the vehicle – who is on the ship – will manage it and float it in a grid pattern, an agreed pattern, where they can look for anything unusual on the seabed.”

OceanGate’s Titan submarine has been missing since Sunday (18). The United States Coast Guard confirmed the deaths of the passengers on the submarine on Thursday (22), after the wreckage was found, indicating that there was a loss of cabin pressure.
British businessman Hamish Harding, diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman Dawood and OceanGate CEO and founder Stockton Rush were on board.
“On behalf of the US Coast Guard, I extend my condolences to the families. I can only imagine what this has been like for them and I hope this discovery brings some comfort at this very difficult time,” said Rear Admiral John Mauger, commander of the Coast Guard First District, in a press conference.
