WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, but when it comes to Apple platforms, it’s only available for iPhone and Mac. Now, thanks to developer Adam Foote, Apple Watch users can finally access WhatsApp with the new WristChat app.
WristChat uses the WhatsApp Web API to access user messages on the smartwatch app. However, the app was built using SwiftUI to provide an interface designed for the Apple Watch. After installing the app on your Apple Watch, all you need to do is scan the QR code on the screen with WhatsApp on your phone.

Once set up for the first time, the app displays a list of all your recent messages, similar to what you get in Apple’s Messages app. You can then tap on a conversation to view messages and even send a new one. Users will also find several interface customization options. For example, the app lets you choose whether you want to see your contacts’ profile pictures in the message list and change the color of the message popups. The app has built-in haptic feedback and hints to help users navigate the app.
Users can also send WhatsApp messages using WristChat. While you can’t start a new conversation from the app, it’s possible to send messages in any of your current conversations. You can use any of the input methods available for Apple Watch, such as dictation and Scribble.

The app integrates with WristBoard, the Apple Watch keyboard app formerly called Shift Keyboard. With WristBoard, you can not only type on a full keyboard, but also have access to autocorrect and suggestions. What’s more, it works with any Apple Watch model, not just the Series 7.
WristChat and WristBoard are available on the App Store for $3 each.
