WHERE: The recommendation for Merck antiviral pill is expected by the beginning of February

The World Health Organization is currently examining Merck antiviral drug against COVID-19 and a recommendation is possible by early February, an official said today.

Janet Dias, head of clinical management at the WHO, said that the WHO Instruction Development Team is also preparing to test the Pfizer pill.

“We will look at this data (for the Pfizer pill) in early February for publication possibly later that month.”

Late yesterday, Thursday, a committee of the WHO. recommended the use of two drugs by Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology for patients with COVID-19, increasing treatment options, as the rapidly transmitted Omicron variant makes some ineffective.

Referring to monoclonal antibody therapies, Dias said that some monoclonals show reduced neutralization against the highly contagious Omicron and may be less effective against this variant.

However, he said that it does not “bring upside down”, as many treatment options are now available for COVID-19.

“We are monitoring the antivirals for the development of resistance,” the WHO official added.
