Where to eat in Bordeaux: a selection of restaurants by Daniela Filomeno

Bordeaux, CNN Travel & Gastronomy’s first international destination, it is not just a crossing point for its renowned vineyards. Historic city based on rich classical architecture, its streets, squares and boulevards live relaxed – and delicious – brasseries.

Want the basics of French cuisine? bet on succulent meats accompanied by crispy fries, easy to find in Bordeaux. Want something more refined? The city is full of bistros that offer oysters, caviar, foie gras and many other delicacies.

As well as its hotels, here there are brasseries, bistros and cafes that unite, like no other place, the impeccable service with a lot of relaxation, serving with quality both the French themselves and us, visitors to the “little Paris”.

Speaking of delicacies, being in Bordeaux is synonymous with experiencing the canelé on every corner. A traditional sweet of the city and one of its best preserved treasures, it is made from a small dough flavored with rum and vanilla, with a soft cream center and a thick, dark caramelized crust. It’s shaped like a small cylinder – it’s a must-see and very appetizing.

And how to talk about Bordeaux without talking about its wines? Impossible! The main meals are washed down with brands produced in the region and which are among the best in the world. After all, to be in Bordeaux is to be in the drinking capital of the world.

Whether in the bustling center or on streets farther away from the tourist hubbub, discover some of the best places to eat well within the city of Bordeaux:

Brasserie Le Noailles

It is a brasserie located right in the heart of Bordeaux, on the Allées de Tourny, a historic street very close to the huge Place des Quinconces square and just a few minutes walk from the Grand Theatre. The interesting thing I could notice is that the The Noailles is a bistro truly frequented by the French.

It can be described as classic: with a great location, it serves the local population with good food, it has mirrors, murals, red velvet benches and waiters in black vests and white aprons, even reminiscent of some Paris brasseries.

The tip is to order duck confit and, since we are in France, french fries. For me they are the best in Bordeaux.

Address: 12 All. de Tourny, 33000 Bordeaux, France

The 1925

A few meters from Le Noailles is the The 1925, on the Place des Quinconces, which, as the name suggests, has an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920s and the famous Parisian brasseries.

It’s a delicious bistro, full of French cuisine and, as much as it recalls ancient times, it has a modern sophistication. Be sure to try the house steak tartare, which I recommend with your eyes closed, and which has two versions: the classic and the Italian, both accompanied by French fries.

For dessert, my suggestion is the house crepe Suzette, a traditional French dessert that is flambéed with Grand Marnier liqueur.

L’Estacade Restaurant

O The Estacade it is a large house built on stilts on the banks of the river Garonne. Therefore, its landscape is breathtaking, with a view to the left side of the river and with a direct view of Place de la Bourse and the waters.

Glass and wood make up the restaurant’s decor, where more informal tables are on the outside veranda. The menu mixes flavors and touches from both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Among the starters, the highlights are the “hazelnut” oysters from the Bay of Arcachon, the caviar and the duck foie gras terrine. Fish and meat are among the main dishes, as well as the traditional selection of cheeses at the end of the meal.

Le Café Français Bistrot and Brasserie

O French coffee it has a super advantage in its favor: it is directly opposite one of Bordeaux’s must-see sights, the Saint-André Cathedral. The cathedral has centuries of history, has been the scene of royal weddings and has towers that reach up to 80 meters in height.

All this just a few steps away from the restaurant’s outdoor tables, which are ideal for sitting and calmly enjoying a coffee or a glass of wine – as I did myself. The interior room is filled with tables with red fabric chairs, in the mold of traditional brasseries, with mirrors and chandeliers.

Address: 5 Pl. Pey Berland, 33000 Bordeaux, France

The Bordelaise Brewery

O The Bordelaise Brewery it is one of the best known brasseries in the city, being very traditional and busy. Unlike other brasseries, their tables are made of wood, wines are on several shelves throughout the restaurant and some meats are hanging on display.

As its name indicates, the kitchen produces classic dishes of French cuisine and the region. The suggestion is to order an ox cheek – a lot of people turn up their noses when they say its name, but the truth is that it looks like a boeuf bourguignon. It is a meat cooked slowly at low temperatures that shreds on the plate. Proof of this is that I didn’t even need a knife to cut it, you can even slice it with a spoon.

The ideal is to end with the selection of cheeses, which is super traditional in France, and, if you want to sweeten your lunch or dinner even more, choose one of the nine desserts on the menu.

At the Bistrot Bordeaux Capucins

O At the Bistro is a cozy restaurant a little removed from the tourist hubbub of central Bordeaux, situated on the corner of the narrow Rue de Hamel. Its facade has green awnings and its interior is not very large.

The atmosphere is intimate and, in addition to the tables, you can sit at the bar counter, where you can watch the cooks come and go. The menu contains classics of French cuisine, without many complications, such as soups and meats. Tip: in Bordeaux, it’s always good to leave room for dessert.

At Dupont

O At Dupont it is located in Chartrons, a neighborhood that has both bourgeois and bohemian influences, being charming and wooded. On the emblematic Rue Notre Dame is Chez Dupont, a pleasant and intimate restaurant with fresh products and a menu that changes every day.

From the menu, I highlight sausages as a starter, such as Iberico de Bellota, cured ham jamon and long-ripening loin, as well as duck foie gras in a terrine semi-cooked at low temperature.

Also enjoy the entrecôte with fries – one of the best I’ve tasted, very well served. The tip is to eat at the tables on the outdoor terrace to enjoy life in the neighborhood.
