The White House said Tuesday that a close reading of Israel and Hamas' negotiating positions on a hostage ceasefire compromise suggests both sides should be able to reach an agreement.
“They should be able to close the remaining gaps,” said national security spokesman John Kirby. “We will do everything we can to support this process and achieve this outcome.”
CIA Director Bill Burns was in Cairo, Egypt, for discussions on Tuesday (7), after Hamas accepted a ceasefire proposal, but which Israel said was “far from” meeting its demands. .
Humanitarian aid deliveries
Kirby stressed that it is “absolutely critical” that Israel allows humanitarian aid into Gaza, after the Israeli military took control of the crossings at Kerem Shalom and Rafah, blocking two vital aid points into the Palestinian territory.
“Rafah is now closed because of this operation they are conducting, and Kerem Shalom has been closed for several days,” Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby told CNN .
The Israeli army captured the Palestinian side of Rafah crossing the border in a night raid launched on Monday (6), after ordering the evacuation of Gazans in parts of Rafah earlier in the day.
Kerem Shalom was closed last week after it was hit by at least 10 rockets, killing three Israeli soldiers, in an attack claimed by Hamas.
