WHO will cut costs and change priorities after departure from the US, says document

The World Health Organization (WHO) will cut costs and review which health programs prioritize after the US announces its departure, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the team in an internal memorandum seen by Reuters.

US President Donald Trump announced on the first day of his second term on Monday (20), claiming that the agency dealt badly with the Covid-19 pandemic and other international health crises.

“This announcement has made our financial situation more acute…” said Tedros Adhanom, in a memo to the team dated 23 January.

He said the agency plans to significantly reduce travel expenses and stop recruitment as part of a series of cost -savings measures.

An WHO spokesman confirmed that the memorandum was authentic, but refused to make more comments.

The United Nations confirmed on Thursday (23) that the US should withdraw from WHO on January 22, 2026.

The United States is by far the largest funder of the organization, contributing about 18% of its general funding.

WHO’s latest biennial budget for 2024-2025 was $ 6.8 billion.
