With Ômicron, it’s not time to think that the pandemic is over, says former president of Anvisa

This Tuesday (14), the minister Luis Roberto Barroso, do Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided by the obligation of vaccine certificate against Covid-19 in the country — which goes into effect immediately.

Travelers who left the country before the decision were made subject to the previous rules, that is, they are not required to present a vaccination card.

Dirceu Barbano, former president of the National Health Surveillance Agency, told CNN that “we are setting an example of what should not be done at a moment’s notice, putting health and public health issues ahead of others.”

Barbano highlights the history of Anvisa to control immunization against diseases and points out that the Agency has difficulty in operating the control of what is usual. “We had to wait for the STF to do it. This is already a problem.”

Despite this, he points out that the way is to attribute responsibility to those who have it. “Everything we are experiencing is the responsibility of the federal government’s denial attitudes. These attitudes compromise the country’s ability to do things right,” he said.

Quarantine in the country

Dirceu Barbano also criticizes the model of adopting a quarantine of just five days to enter the country.

“The standard that has been adopted around the world is quarantines that range from 10 to 14 days. What many countries adopt is a test, but never shorter than 10 days.”

“We have to understand this measure as a control barrier. The objective is simple, it is to ensure that someone who has come, and who arrived in the country already infected with the virus, do not be a vector of transmission to other people.”

He explains that “what science has taught us is that the time you have the certainty of knowing whether a person is still transmitting the virus is at least 10 days.

“If we look at what happens out there, countries even indicate people to stay in places chosen by the authorities [para a quarentena]”, points out.

Brazil is far behind a ‘gold’ standard. “Here, from what can be seen from the fragmentation of responsibilities, these barriers [medidas de proteção] they get fragile.”

Here, we opted for the ‘make believe’ that we have a problem, said Barbano. “The more than 630,000 people who lost their lives, their families, their loved ones, are witnesses that this make-believe caused a great tragedy and a great trauma for all of us.”

Omicron

Barbano points out that with the arrival of Omicron, this is no time to think the pandemic is over. “Sad but true. This virus causes death. Whether the original strain or the variants already identified.”

For the former president of Anvisa, the form of protection is to adopt the vaccine. “We have to value the act of vaccination, which is not an individual act. Understand this as a form of responsibility for the lives of other people”, he said.

He believes that “humanity will continue to face this problem for some time to come.”
