With the presence of Lula, Alckmin and Dilma, Mercadante takes office at the BNDES this Monday (6)

Aloizio Mercadante assumes the presidency of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) this Monday (6), in a ceremony that will be attended by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT).

The ceremony will take place at 10 am at Teatro Arino Ramos Ferreira, at the bank’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The BNDES board of directors had approved Mercadante’s name for the position on January 25th. Previously, an order from the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) endorsed the nomination.

There were uncertainties regarding the nomination due to the State-Owned Companies Law, which restricts the appointment to boards of directors or directors of state-owned companies, including the presidency, of “a person who acted, in the last 36 (thirty-six) months, as a participant in the decision-making structure of political party or work linked to the organization, structuring and carrying out of an electoral campaign”.

Mercadante was coordinator of President Lula’s government program during the election campaign. However, he had been claiming that this work was voluntary and restricted to intellectual work.

Among the announced BNDES board members are Tereza Campello, Natalia Dias and Helena Tenorio, Alexandre Corrêa Abreu, José Luis Gordon, Nelson Barbosa Filho and Luiz Navarro.

“Patience and competence”

President Lula stated in a meeting with governors on January 27 that the BNDES will once again become a development bank and will help the states.

For this, as assessed by the head of state, the institution must have “patience and competence” to lend money to governors.

“The money that the BNDES raises has to be shared with small, medium and large companies, with governors and mayors depending on the quality and importance of the works”, added Lula.

On another occasion, Aloizio Mercadante defended the “reindustrialization” of the country and that the BNDES industry portfolio be expanded.

In addition, he highlighted that they are “building the BNDES of the future”, and that they will not bring the institution “from the past”.
