Did you think makeup made you look more attractive? Well, no more. According to a new study conducted by the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland, it was found that women who wear discreet makeup or a natural face are perceived as “better leaders” and also as “more attractive and intelligent”.

Less makeup, more intelligence
A study led by Dr. Christopher Watkins from the Abertay University Division of Psychology and published in the journal Perception showed that the amount of makeup a woman wears can have a positive or negative impact on perceptions of her ability to be a leader.
In the study, the 168 participants were asked to view a series of images of the same woman, some without makeup and others with “social night” makeup. Then with the help of a software computer manipulated the amount of makeup in the photographs.
Each participant analyzed the change, in which by the way the modification was made on 16 faces, and then they made notes about who was the woman who looked the best as a leader.
The study revealed that both men and women rate women who wear too much makeup negatively. However, those with 50 percent makeup were considered the best leaders. Additionally, Dr. Watkins revealed that:
This research follows previous work in this area, suggesting that wearing makeup enhances a woman’s dominant appearance. While the above findings suggest that we are inclined to show some deference to a woman with an attractive face, our new research suggests that makeup does not enhance a woman’s dominance by benefiting the way we evaluate a leadership role. This work is a good example of the diverse and interesting research that is being carried out within the Division of Psychology of the University.
It is not a study to make value judgments
Although it is a study promoted by the Division of Psychology at the University, both Dr. Watkins and the people who helped with the research mentioned that this does not determine a woman’s intelligence and worth.
The research is not intended to promote a value judgment; It is up to each woman how she feels most comfortable. The intention was simply to demonstrate what people, on average, can say or do when you ask them to state their first impressions of other people.
Now we know that it is only about research and that wearing makeup is about a personal choice that does not make you more or less intelligent, but rather happier.
