Based on the book of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929, “Nothing New on the Front” premiered on Netflix on Friday (28).
The film tells the moving story of a young German soldier during the First World War. In the trenches, fighting for their lives, Paul and his colleagues experience firsthand how the initial euphoria of war turns to despair and fear.
under the direction of the german Edward Berger the film is staged by Felix Kammerer and has Daniel Bruhl (“Inglourious Basterds” and “Rush”) in the cast.
Shown for the first time at the Toronto Film Festival, “Nothing New on the Front” is Germany’s nominee for this year’s Oscars.
With more than two hours of duration, the production it was critically acclaimed for its fidelity to the source material and its timely anti-war message.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the main aggregator of film and television reviews, the film has 94% acceptance from critics and 92% from the public.
It is not the first time that Remaque’s work has been adapted for the screen. In 1930, “No New on the Front”in Lewis Milestone (“The Great Riot” and “Man’s Eleven”), hit theaters. The film was the big Oscar winner that year, securing the awards for Best Picture and Best Director.
