The social media X (Formerly Twitter) announced today that, at the behest of the Indian government, download some accounts and postswhich according to local media reports, linked to the ongoing farmers' protests for the low selling prices of their crops.
The platform did not provide further details about the blocking of the accounts, but said that disagrees with this move and that it constitutes a limitation of freedom of expression.
“We will download these accounts and posts only in India. However, we disagree with these actions and argue that freedom of expression should also apply to these posts,” X's management wrote in a post without naming the accounts.
The announcement is made after a week of protests by thousands of Indian farmers, who have erupted 200 kilometers north of Delhi after police blocked their march to the capital and fired tear gas at crowds that tried to advance. The newspaper “Hindustan Times” wrote that the “emergency orders to block the accounts were issued last week by the government and concern the accounts of some farmers' organizations and their supporters”.
The Home Affairs and Information Technology ministries did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
