Xiaomi denies content censorship on its smartphones, which the government of Lithuania accused of

On the morning of September 22, news spread in the media that the Lithuanian government cybersecurity authority accused Xiaomi of censoring content on its smartphones. Lithuanian experts came to this conclusion after analyzing the activity of Xiaomi Mi 10T with MIUI Global 12.0.10 firmware – they stated that the built-in system components (including a proprietary browser, an application installer and a security utility) receive a blocklist with censored phrases. Xiaomi has given an official comment on this matter.

The company highlighted several facts:

  • Xiaomi devices do not censor messages to or from their users;
  • Xiaomi has never limited and will never restrict or block the personal activities of users of the company’s smartphones, such as searching, making calls, browsing the web or using third-party communication software;
  • Xiaomi fully respects and protects the legal rights of all users;
  • the capabilities of third-party advertising filters on Xiaomi devices are disabled in the EU and in any jurisdiction where their use is contrary to applicable laws;
  • Xiaomi complies with the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
