Shiva is originally from the city of Hyderabad, Kothanandikona, in India, a country in which thousands of deaths have been registered due to this virus. His story is going around the world because of the steps he took to keep his family safe.
Shiva tested positive for coronavirus on May 4 and since he did not want to risk any member of his family, he improvised a platform on a tree in front of his house.
There he built a bed with bamboo sticks and improvised a system of pulleys to receive water and food. To wash himself, he would go down the tree at night and walk to the nearest river, from where he drank some water from a bucket. The boy tried to do everything as cleanly as possible to avoid infecting others.
There is no isolation center here. Just two days ago they turned a shelter into a center. Until then we had nothing and I don’t know if there are centers of this type in other towns… I don’t think so. What else can I do?
The decision to isolate himself in a tree came from the lack of space in his house, such a small place that, in his own words, it is difficult to maintain a healthy distance.
Shiva admits that going through this situation was extremely difficult, because he does not know how he contracted the virus, he did not receive help from the authorities or from a doctor. In addition, he had to endure the rejection of his community, as they feared getting too close to him and getting infected.
After 11 days of isolation, her neighbors became concerned and called the police. With the necessary security measures, Shiva came down from the tree on May 15, was transferred to a shelter, received medical attention and as soon as he tested negative for COVID-19, he was able to return home safely.
