Are the opportunities a matter of luck or hard work? At least for Elizabeth Esteban it is a constant effort. Recently, the young woman of Purepecha origin shared her emotion on social networks after receiving the news that she was accepted at the prestigious Harvard University.
Elizabeth has become the pride of her family and now also of the entire Mexican population, since she not only entered university, but also got a full scholarship. You have to know their history to know that dreams really do come true.
The family has always fought
The girl is the daughter of indigenous Purépecha migrants who work in the Coachella Valley, California, United States, as farmers. The family had to travel from Michoacán, Mexico, to seek a better quality of life.
Once they arrived in the United States, the girl’s parents dedicated themselves to working to give their children everything they needed. They currently live in a mobile home and although they still have some financial difficulties, that has not been an impediment for everyone to attend school.
His reaction has already gone viral
Elizabeth always dreamed of going to college, so she applied to Harvard in hopes of being accepted and when they finally sent the letter, welcoming her and advising her that she has a full scholarship, she knew that all of her effort and his family’s had been worth it. When he shared the video of his reaction on social media, it immediately went viral.
In an interview with NBC, Cecilia Esteban, Elizabeth’s mother, said she was happy that her daughter is fulfilling her dreams:
It was worth it because my daughter achieved what she wanted so much: to study, and now with more reason. I’m very proud of her.
Didn’t think applying was a good idea
Elizabeth also commented that she was on the verge of not submitting the application because she did not believe that her family had enough money to cover the expenses.
At first I was not going to apply to Harvard because I did not feel that my achievements deserved to have such a prestigious university. And I don’t have a person who knows how to submit applications there. But then I thought about myself and how I had to continue fighting and so the pandemic would only be another obstacle that I had to overcome.
Fortunately, she had the courage to apply and now she will be able to study Political Science and perhaps in the future become a congresswoman who fights for the rights of migrants.
