Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro argued on Thursday that economic sanctions imposed by the West on Russia over the war in Ukraine had failed, echoing comments from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
The comments by Mr Bolsonaro, who met with Mr Putin in Moscow days before the invasion began on February 24, are likely to deeply upset the US and EU countries, which have already criticized Brazil’s cooperation with Russia.
“The economic barriers imposed by the US and Europe against Russia have not worked,” Brazil’s far-right president told supporters. He added that he was pursuing a policy of “balance” against Mr Putin and the war.
Mr Bolsonaro added that taking this stance allowed his government to buy fertilizer from Russia, a key commodity for Brazil’s vast agricultural sector.
He also said Moscow shares Brasilia’s concerns about challenging Brazilian “national sovereignty” in the Amazon rainforest.
Earlier yesterday, Mr Putin said Western sanctions were obviously causing difficulties, but not those “calculated by those who launched the economic blitzkrieg against Russia”.
The term blitzkrieg (“lightning war”) used by the Russian president refers, apparently deliberately, to the army of the Third Reich, Nazi Germany.
In June, Messrs. Bolsonaro and Putin discussed global food security by phone and reaffirmed their will to strengthen their bilateral strategic cooperation.
