Zakharova: Russia could hit targets in NATO member states supplying weapons to Ukraine

The Kremlin has warned that it could target British military bases in the UK over British support for Ukraine, adding that it could also hit British diplomats returning to Kyiv after “provocative” Russian Defense Minister’s support for Russian bombing. , as reported by the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, hinted that blows could be dealt to NATO member states supplying weapons to Ukraine.

She warned: “Do we understand that for reasons of disruption of the supply of military supplies, Russia can hit military targets on the territory of those NATO member countries that supply weapons to the Kiev regime?

“After all, this leads directly to deaths and bloodshed on Ukrainian soil. From what I understand, Britain is one of those countries,” he said.

Zakharova’s remarks came after British Armed Forces Secretary James Heappey said the United Kingdom supported Ukrainian airstrikes against Russian infrastructure.

He added that it would be “perfectly legal” to use British weapons in such attacks, although they are not currently believed to be used.

Heappey also said Britain would resume training Ukrainian troops inside Ukraine if the conflict “froze” in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

But the remarks provoked the Kremlin’s anger, with the Russian Defense Ministry accusing him of “provocation.”

In a sharp escalation of tension, Moscow also warned that it would be ready to retaliate against “decision-making centers” in Kyiv in retaliation, even if there were British and other Western diplomats.

Meanwhile, Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the Select Defense Committee, said Heappey’s statements had the “potential to provoke retaliatory attacks in Poland”. He also warned that Russia could hit Western targets outside Ukraine and told the Times that the West was “increasingly involved in a proxy war”.
