He died at the age of 85 by Rupia Banda, the 4th democratically elected president of Zambia, after a battle with colon cancer for two years. His health had deteriorated in recent months.
His son, Andrew, announced in a brief announcement that his father had passed away.
Banda ruled Zambia from 2008 to 2011 and cried when he handed over power to Michael Sata. He played a key role in the smooth transition of power last August following the victory of incumbent President Hakide Hitsilema in the elections. It was his last major contribution to the political life of his country.
After the death of Banda, Edgar Lungu (who was succeeded by Hitzilema as president) is the only former Zambian president still alive today.
