Zelensky calls for the formation of a ‘special court’ to examine war crimes in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today called for a “special court” to investigate the Russian invasion of his country, addressing an international war crimes conference in The Hague.

“Today’s judicial institutions cannot bring to justice all the perpetrators. Therefore, a special court is needed to try the crimes of the Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Zelensky said in his videotaped speech.

Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said Western countries should consider this possibility so that crimes committed in Ukraine do not go unpunished.

“It’s worth looking at, as I understand it, we have to fill the void. The International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction,” Hoekstra explained, referring to the possibility of Ukraine’s war crimes being tried in The Hague.

The Dutch minister admitted that “it probably won’t be easy” to set up such a court but “we will try to help Ukraine as much as we can”.

Ukrainian prosecutor Irina Venediktova said Kyiv has already prosecuted 127 war crimes suspects.
