Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, saying the ministry needs “new approaches” as the war with Russia enters its 19th month.
“This week, parliament will be asked to make a personal decision… I have decided to replace Ukraine’s defense minister. Oleksii Reznikov has gone through more than 550 days of full-scale war,” said the Ukrainian leader. Reznikov’s ousting follows a series of corruption scandals involving Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. Although Reznikov was not implicated in any of these, the scandals are still considered to have harmed him by association.
Zelensky nominated Rustem Umerov, a former deputy from Ukraine, to become the new defense minister.
“The Verkhovna Rada (legislature) of Ukraine knows this person well, and Mr. Umerov needs no further introduction,” Zelensky said. “I hope parliament will support this candidate.”
