Ukrainian forces are repelling continuous attacks on the city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, and are holding their positions in neighboring Solendar under very difficult conditions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said tonight.
“Bahmut holds. And although most of the city has been destroyed by Russian shelling, our soldiers are repelling the Russians’ constant attempts to advance,” Zelensky said in his nightly address.
“Soledar is holding on, although the destruction is even greater and the situation is very difficult,” he added.
Zelensky also reiterated that Russia did not abide by its unilateral Christmas truce after it launched attacks on Ukrainian cities. “The Russians were firebombing Kherson right after Christmas,” he said, referring to the city that Russian forces abandoned in November.
“Wounds in Kramatorsk and other cities in the Donbass – on civilian targets, at the same time that Moscow reported an alleged silence of arms,” he added.
Russia announced today that 600 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in a missile attack in Kramatorskhowever Reuters journalists who were at the scene did not find any signs that there were any casualties from this blow.
