Zelensky: We need more weapons, do not leave them in storage

LAST UPDATE: 23:58

Ukraine will retake all the cities occupied by Russian forces, including Sheverodonetsk, which fell to the Russians today, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while acknowledging that the war was devastating.

In a videotaped evening message, the Ukrainian president also said his country had been hit in the past 24 hours by 45 Russian missiles and rockets, citing a cynical but doomed attempt by Moscow to lower the morale of the Ukrainian people.

“Therefore, we will take back all our cities – Severodonetsk, Donetsk, Luhansk,” he said.

This was the only time during his videotaped message that he referred to Sheverodonetsk, which finally fell into the hands of the Russians today, after weeks of violent fighting and bombing.

“At this stage, the war is devastating … we do not feel it will last long, how many more bombings, losses and efforts will be needed to see victory on the horizon,” the Ukrainian president said.

At the same time, he stressed that Russia’s relentless missile strikes confirm that sanctions against Moscow are not enough to help Ukraine, which needs more weapons.

“Air defense systems – the modern systems that our partners have – should not be located in training facilities or warehouses, but in Ukraine, where they are needed now, they are needed more than anywhere else in the world,” Zelensky added.
