Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that sooner or later Russian pilots will be held responsible for killing civilians.
“I would like to repeat that again to all Russian drivers, they are not thinking about the orders they are carrying out. Killing civilians is a crime. And they will be held accountable for that, whether today or tomorrow, that is inevitable,” Zelensky said in a video posted on the Ukrainian government’s Facebook page.
“Especially the planes that bomb Mariupol, and that will happen to everyone who is killing our civilians, in our peaceful land,” he said. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied Ukrainian allegations of attacks on civilians.
Without providing evidence, Zelensky claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces shot down a Russian plane near Chornobaivka in Kherson.
Mariupol has been suffering from devastating air strikes for several weeks and 100,000 people in the city are without water and without access to medicine, the president of Ukraine said. A local city official told the CNN that bombs have been falling on the city every ten minutes.
In recent days, thousands of people have made the perilous journey out of the city in private vehicles, en route to Zaporizhzhia, a town more than 200 kilometers away that is still in Ukraine’s hands.
