At a press conference during the Venice Film Festival on Thursday (31), “Ferrari” star Adam Driver criticized streaming giants Amazon and Netflix as SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in Hollywood continue.
“Why would a smaller distribution company like Neon and STX International [distribuidores de “Ferrari”] can meet the dream demands that SAG is asking for – this is pre-negotiations – the dream version of SAG’s wish list, but a big company like Netflix and Amazon can’t,” asked Driver.
He added that “every time people at SAG support a film that agreed to these terms – the tentative agreement – it just makes it more obvious that those people are willing to support the people they collaborate with, and the others aren’t.”
The actor has starred in several Netflix movies, including last year’s “White Noise” and 2019’s “Marriage Stories,” for which he was nominated for an Oscar.
Driver is among the few actors participating in events at the Venice Film Festival through interim agreement exemptions with SAG-AFTRA for independent projects. Strike guidelines prohibit actors association members from promoting movies and TV series produced by studios and streamers that are part of the AMPTP.
Members of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike in July, and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers have been on strike since May.
Directed by Michael Mann, “Ferrari” is an independent film starring Driver as Enzo Ferrari, the Italian sports car tycoon, and tells the story of his life.
“I am very happy to be here to support this film,” Driver said in Venice, adding that he is also “very proud to be here to be a visual representation of a film that is not part of the AMPTP and to further the leadership of the SAG directive , which is an effective tactic – which is the interim agreement.”
