Afghanistan, the end of freedom in 10 photos

More than four months have passed since the Taliban took Kabul, Afghanistan. Since we began to see, and review, as if in a blast from the past 20 years earlier, the photos of the Taliban’s return to power, of advertising posters scarred only because they depicted women in make-up, with their faces uncovered. The photos of the fear of thousands of people who by any means, but above all on foot, arrived at the international airport of Kabul to save themselves. To save their children from a future of denied fear and freedom.

The bans have come, one after the other, day by day. The most recent one established that women will no longer be able to travel distances greater than 72 kilometers without a male companion. The previous ones, among other things, have already imposed on women not to go to school and not to work once they reach the age of 12. Furthermore, no taxi driver can take a woman into a car if she is not wearing a veil and it is forbidden, even for men, to listen to music in the car.

Together with the loss of freedom, extreme poverty, hunger, has returned. And the frost. “The population is exhausted. There is no food. The harsh Afghan winter has just begun and tonight the temperature has already dropped to -7 degrees. Families do not have money for wood, often there is no electricity in the houses for electric stoves. The situation is dramatic, ”he explains Luca Lo Presti president of Pangea Onlus Foundation, at the forefront of assistance to the Afghan people. Which all the info to support it.

«Over 3 million children have no food. Pangea has started the distribution of food packages, blankets, warm clothes and basic necessities in 7 Afghan provinces. We will reach over seven thousand families, over 60,000 children. We receive requests for help every day. Colleagues left in Afghanistan send us dramatic photos. We often feel helpless in the face of these images. We do not leave them alone. Don’t leave us alone ».
