Senior executives of the Islamist movement Taliban met yesterday Sunday in Kabul with his deputy secretary general United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Officer Martin Griffiths, who promised them that aid to the people of Afghanistan would continue, according to their spokesman, Suhail Sahin.
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the head of the Taliban’s political bureau, and other officials have met with Mr Griffiths as Afghanistan faces a potentially devastating humanitarian crisis due to prolonged drought and economic collapse.
“The UN delegation has promised to continue humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, saying it will seek further assistance to Afghanistan during the forthcoming summit of donor countries,” Suhail Sahin tweeted.
Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, is plunged into crisis as multibillion-dollar international aid is cut off after the collapse of the Western-backed government and the military domination of the Taliban in mid-August.
According to their spokesman, the Taliban assured the UN delegation that there would be “cooperation” on their part and that they would provide the international organization with the “necessary facilities”.
The United Nations is meeting in Geneva on Monday (September 13th) to seek funding for aid to Afghanistan and to prevent what UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called a “threatening humanitarian catastrophe”.
