After joining the manifesto, Bolsonaro makes an offensive to get closer to bankers

After the adhesion of businessmen to a manifesto in favor of democracy, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will make an offensive this Monday (8) to try to get closer to the financial sector.

In the company of ministers Paulo Guedes (Economy) and Ciro Nogueira (Casa Civil), the president will participate in a lunch with executives from Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) and the National Council of Financial Institutions (CNF).

The meeting will take place after the decision of the entity, which represents the largest banks in the country, to adhere to the manifesto in defense of democracy led by Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo).

Febraban was already organizing an institutional agenda with the main candidates for the Presidency of the Republic. The decision for this Monday’s lunch came from Bolsonaro, according to an investigation by the CNN .

After Febraban’s position, just over a week ago, the president criticized bankers who would have lost billions of reais in revenue with Pix.

“I hit them with a stick,” he told supporters at Palácio da Alvorada. Bolsonaro repeated Ciro, who used social media to attack executives.

The decision to go to the meeting with the bankers, according to sources heard by the CNN meets the strategy of the president’s electoral campaign of rapprochement with the group that, in 2018, supported his candidacy and the appointment of Guedes to take over the Economy.

Guedes has publicly criticized Febraban on several occasions, corroborating the perception of many analysts that the distance between the minister and Faria Lima has only increased in recent years.

The financial market adopted an even more critical tone after the approval of the PEC of Precatórios last year. The noise increased with the difference in forecasts for economic activity and with the electoral agenda installed by the PEC of Benefits.

Following the protocol of institutional meetings, financial sector executives must listen to Bolsonaro’s position and, if necessary, present more comprehensive guidelines to the president.

On the government side, Ciro is prepared for a more assertive position. He wants to ask bankers to offer payroll-deductible loans with lower interest rates to beneficiaries of Auxílio Brasil.

“It is necessary to be sensitive at this moment with the most vulnerable population. The payroll loan for beneficiaries of Auxílio Brasil must have interest that does not put families in difficulty. The moment calls for everyone to unite,” the minister told CNN .

Among the big banks, the president of Bradesco, Octávio de Lazari, has already signaled that he should not operate the consignment to government beneficiaries.

Caixa and Banco do Brasil, potential leaders in the category authorized last week, have not yet given details about their participation.

The internal evaluation of the reelection campaign is that the meeting at Febraban tends to have a milder atmosphere and with less criticism of Bolsonaro, unlike a meeting with Grupo Esfera or Fiesp, whose presence of the president was unmarked.

According to the president’s allies, members of the financial institution have indicated to Palácio do Planalto that this is an attempt at constructive dialogue, not a meeting to pressure the president, as presidential aides feared in the two unscheduled meetings.
