The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), in the USA, said that 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's (24) Pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the University of Southern California (USC).
“The university is a private campus and the group was violating some of its orders. At that point, it was a raid and we helped with the arrests,” Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a press conference.
One person was also arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, Muniz said. She did not provide further details.
No protesters or officers were injured, police said.
The USC Department of Public Safety ordered protesters to gather in the campus's Alumni Park Wednesday afternoon to disperse or face arrest for trespassing.
At one point during the demonstrations, tensions rose when protesters refused to move and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said.
The university closed its campus Wednesday night as the LAPD began arresting protesters.
From California to Massachusetts, there have been a series of large demonstrations on college campuses over the past week. On many campuses, protesters set up unauthorized camps to enforce their demands.
Since Friday, hundreds of students and others have been arrested at Columbia, Yale and New York University, while critics, including prominent Republican members of Congress, have stepped up accusations of anti-Semitism and harassment by at least some protesters.
