August 2024 was the month with the most fires at the historical base of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), which began measurements in 1998.
This year’s total number of fires is close to the number recorded in 2023, which was 19,604.
In recent days, the southwest Amazon has become the global region with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, according to the European Union’s Copernicus program.
The information was released by biologist and researcher Lucas Ferrante, from USP and the Federal University of Amazonas, in an interview with CNN .
According to Ferrante, the alarming increase in emissions is directly related to concentration of fires.
