The International Analyst of CNN Lourival Sant’Anna said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent ironic statement about supporting Democratic candidate for President of the United States, Kamala Harris, is actually a strategy to help Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 elections.
According to Sant’Anna, Trump has historically “played Putin’s game” and vice versa.
The analyst recalled that in 2016 Russia hacked the databases of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s campaign, following a public appeal from Trump during a press conference.
Russian interference in the US elections
The expert highlighted that an investigation was recently announced revealing that Russia had invested US$10 million in American influencers.
The aim would be to disseminate narratives favorable to Russian views on Ukraine, Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Sant’Anna also mentioned that, when he was president, Trump questioned the FBI and CIA investigations that pointed to Russian interference in the campaign.
After a meeting with Putin, Trump declared that he trusted the Russian leader more than American intelligence agencies.
Trump’s position on Ukraine
The analyst highlighted that, in a recent podcast, Trump claimed to have a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, which, according to sources heard by the newspaper “Washington Post”, would involve giving up Crimea and Donbas, regions partially occupied or claimed by Russia.
Sant’Anna compared this position to that of leaders such as President Lula (PT) and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who advocate maintaining the current lines of conflict and convincing Ukraine to accept the occupation of its territory by Russia.
This approach, according to the analyst, aligns with Putin’s interests and would potentially benefit Trump in the upcoming US presidential election.
