The game “Astro Bot ” was elected the Game of the Year during the The Game Awards 2024 on Thursday night (12). The choice generated mixed reactions among video game fans, who rushed to social media to express their opinions – many loved it, others hated it.
The game, exclusive to PlayStation 5 puts users in the shoes of a little robot called Astro who suffered a space accident and had his mothership, which is shaped like a Sony video game console, destroyed.
Throughout the game, Astro passes through different planets and universes, full of references to other classic PlayStation games, to find his lost friends and rebuild his ship.
The game was very well rated, both by critics (with 94/100 approval) and by fans (with 9.2/10 approval), according to Metacritic, a website that brings together reviews made by the main specialized vehicles in the area.
On social media, many fans celebrated the victory of a more playful game in the awards. While others argued that the game is too “basic” to take the main category.
The frustrating issue for many is seeing a demo become a game and still get the GOTY. I don’t think even Sony imagined the size of Astro Bot’s potential. pic.twitter.com/GOnla5ISKW

For me, the only complaints about Astro Bot winning game of the year are those who dismiss family platform games as more “serious” and cinematic ones.
But Metaphor deserved to win too

AstroBot was one success after another, a true bingo success:
– fluid
– beautiful
– intuitive
– good to play
– good to watch
– overall pleases
– pissed off Elden Ring fanboy
– brings back our childish side
– makes good use of technology
– distraction from stressGOTY

This year’s Game Awards is the biggest bad joke I’ve ever seen in history. Astro Bot GOTY and no prizes for Silent Hill 2. A named DLC and card game. I’ll never watch that shit again. pic.twitter.com/DqH1upiF8U

Astro Bot is the game that allows itself to be a game, allows itself to be fun and to be a real Video Game experience and not a graphical benchmark
VERY FUCKING, gaming is back https://t.co/UNfA17TCna

If a game were needed to define the term “video game” in the dictionary, Astro Bot would be one of the strongest candidates. The game is VERY good at everything it sets out to do
I didn’t play/consume all the nominees, but it’s far from absurd for Astro to win, it’s a GOTY level game!
