The Australian Drug Regulatory Authority today provisionally approved the Pfizer Inc. coronavirus vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years and the Minister for Health stated that the vaccine could be given to children in this age group from January 10.
“The Therapeutic Goods Administration has made a careful, thorough assessment, deciding that it is safe and effective and that it is in the best interests of children and Australians to vaccinate children aged 5 to 11 years,” said Health Minister Greg Hunt.
Following the initial delays in the general vaccination program against Colvid-19, Australia quickly became one of the most vaccinated countries in the world, with health data showing that almost 88% of Australians over 16 years old.
The Pfizer vaccine for children 5 to 11 years of age still needs to be approved by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ATAGI). Once approved, it will be available to approximately 2.3 million children in this age group.
