Beijing’s streets were nearly empty on Friday as China recorded another record daily Covid-19 infections and cities across the country imposed measures and restrictions to control outbreaks.
Not counting imported infections, China reported 32,695 new local cases on Thursday (24), a daily record for the second consecutive day, surpassing the number set in mid-April, when the commercial hub of Shanghai was crippled by a nationwide lockdown. the city that lasted two months.
Beijing’s daily count for Thursday was 424 new local symptomatic cases and 1,436 asymptomatic cases.
Authorities in the Chinese capital have locked down neighborhoods and temporarily closed shops and other businesses to reduce the risk of infections.
“People can’t even earn a living now. It’s not working anymore. Well, it really involves everyone’s interests,” Yan Zi, a 51-year-old Beijing resident, told Reuters.
“If this continues, there could be a food access issue, and that will be serious.”
