The German government today reiterated its opposition to a planned Turkish military invasion of northern Syria, saying it could worsen an already difficult humanitarian and security situation in the region.
“In our view, such an action would not only worsen the already problematic situation for the people in the region, but also allow a revival of the Islamic State terrorist group,” a foreign ministry spokesman said in Berlin.
Despite Turkey’s legitimate security interests, Ankara also has a responsibility to avoid a potential security gap, the spokesman said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly warned in recent weeks that the Turkish military, which already holds border areas in northern Syria, is planning a new offensive.
Erdogan confirmed the plans during a tripartite summit held in Tehran on Tuesday with Presidents of Iran Ibrahim Raisi and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Both Russia and Iran oppose the Turkish plans.
