The state of Rio Grande do Sul was hit by ‘black rain’ last Tuesday (10). Images of the phenomenon were recorded by residents of the region.
According to Andrea Ramos, a meteorologist at Climatempo, the rain, which has changed color, is a result of the fires in the country. Smoke from fires in the North and Center-West regions ended up reaching the region.
“We have a wind channel that leaves the Amazon, passes through the Center-West and also reaches the South region,” she explains.
The change in the color of rainwater is also caused by soot particles spread in the atmosphere. According to the meteorologist, in addition to rain, smoke from fires also generates the phenomenon known as orange sun.
“It is evidence of the presence of soot and smoke in the atmosphere. In other words, when there are many pollutants, a reflection is generated. The more the color varies from orange to red, the more particular material there is in the atmosphere,” Andrea highlighted.
The meteorologist also points out that to mitigate health risks, it is recommended to wear a mask, stay hydrated, and keep environments more humid.
Air quality
Last Tuesday (10), the Situation Room of the Secretariat of Environment and Infrastructure (Sema) published on its social networks a comparison of the sky in the city of Porto Alegre (RS) to demonstrate the effects of the fires in the region.
In the image, it is possible to see that last Friday (6) – image on the left -, the sky remained sunny and blue in color. However, the photo taken during this Tuesday (10) – image on the right – shows the sky covered by a dense layer of smoke. Check it out:
“Even with the steady, sunny weather, the days have felt gray. Smoke from the fires is blocking the passage of sunlight, creating this appearance,” the Situation Room said in the post.
The company IQAir, which monitors air quality in Porto Alegre (RS), shows that, this Wednesday (11), the quality of the atmosphere is in an “unhealthy” state. The parameters established by the monitoring vary between “Good”, “Moderate”, “Unhealthy for sensitive groups”, “Unhealthy”, “Very unhealthy” and “Dangerous”.
Images captured during a flight also show the sky covered by a dense layer of smoke, in the Rio Grande do Sul city of Santa Maria. Look:
