Borel: The Turkish-Libyan memorandum violates the sovereign rights of third countries

ND MEP Manolis K. “The memorandum of understanding Turkey– Libya of 2019 for the delimitation of areas of maritime jurisdiction in the Mediterranean violates the sovereign rights of third countries, is inconsistent with the Law of the Sea and cannot produce legal consequences for third countries“, says the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, in his reply. While for the recent agreement on the extraction of hydrocarbons Mrurges Turkey to avoid actions that undermine regional stability.

“It is imperative to respect the International Law of the Sea, the principle of good neighborly relations, the sovereignty and sovereign rights over the maritime zones of all coastal states including the rights arising from their islands. All members of the international community must comply with these principles,” concludes Mr. Borrell.
