UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the suggestion that he might resign if he loses two parliamentary seats in the election as “crazy”.
The polls will be the first chance voters have given their verdict on Johnson since a government report last month detailed a series of parties that violated the Covid-19 lockdown at his official residence and office in Downing Street, London.
Earlier this month, he survived a vote of no confidence by lawmakers from his Conservative Party, but his prime ministership remains mired in scandal and Johnson is under investigation by a committee accused of deceiving parliament.
But Johnson, speaking to reporters on his way to Rwanda for a Commonwealth meeting, rejected any suggestion that he might be forced out if the Conservative candidates are defeated in both elections.
“Are you crazy?” he reacted when asked if he would resign if he lost both seats.
“Governing parties generally don’t win by-elections, particularly not mid-term. You know, I’m very hopeful, but you know.”
The two seats, one in the north of England and the other in the south, will go to a vote after the Conservative MPs who held them resigned – one for watching pornography in Parliament and the other after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a teenager.
If the Conservatives lose one or both elections, it is likely to lead to new questions about Johnson’s leadership, despite his having survived the vote of no confidence.
