Brazil adopts free trade with Palestinian Authority in show of support

Brazil has put into force a free trade agreement with the Palestinian Authority, which has been awaiting ratification for over a decade, in a show of support for the Palestinian people. “The agreement is a tangible contribution to an economically viable Palestinian state, which can live in peace and harmony with its neighbors,” the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday. The statement added that Brazil, which recognizes a Palestinian state and allowed the establishment of a Palestinian embassy in the Brazilian capital in 2010, on Friday ratified the agreement between Mercosur, the South American trade bloc, and the Palestinian Authority that it had signed in 2011. Uruguay supported the Palestine deal, a foreign ministry source said, adding that there was little resistance since Mercosur has a similar agreement with Israel.
