Brazil has 72 criminal factions linked to drug trafficking, says study

They exist 72 different criminal factions linked to drug trafficking according to a survey by the Brazilian Public Security Forum and Esfera Brasil, released on the second day of the Esfera Forum, in Guarujá (SP), this Saturday (8).

The research further states that two of these factions have transnational operations with characteristics of criminal holding companies.

The estimate is that, if all the cocaine that passes through Brazil were exported to Europe, the revenue of criminal organizations would be in the order of US$65.7 billion — at the level of comparison, this value is the equivalent of 4% of Brazilian GDP 2021.

Brazil is in the world ranking of countries with the most armored cars, in the top five globally for homicides per 100,000 inhabitants and in the top three for prison population. It is necessary for the three federative spheres to join the private sector to reverse this scenario that directly impacts people’s lives and the country’s economy

The complete study should be launched by Esfera at an event on the eve of the 12th Lisbon Legal Forum, which takes place between the 26th and 28th of June, in Portugal.

The anticipated data brings a map with flows in and out of Brazil of at least 20 illegal transactions, including trafficking in people, drugs, cigarettes, gold, diamonds, pesticides, weapons and wood .

This flow demonstrates the great diversity of economic activities impacted by crime, according to the study.

The research also shows that, despite Brazil having more than 1,500 different public security institutions provided for in the Constitution there is no federal coordination capable, technically and legally, of integrating information and optimizing the fight against organized crime.
