Brazilian olive oil is elected one of the best in the world in competition in Italy

after the oil You knew have joined the list of 10 best in the world in April another Brazilian product was highlighted in an international contest.

This time the single-varietal Arbequina da Milonga premium extra virgin olive oil produced in Triunfo (RS), was elected the best olive oil in the southern hemisphere at the EVO IOOC Italy 2022.

THE italian competition is in its seventh edition and is one of the most important in the world of the category. The results were announced last Saturday (21) at a ceremony at the Aragonese Castle in the commune of Bacoli, in the region of Naples.

Christian Vogt, partner and sommelier of the Rio Grande do Sul brand, attended the occasion and received the award in hand. “Italy continues to be an olive oil mecca, so being among so many producers and being recognized as an olive oil of excellence in a young country like Brazil in this market is fantastic”, reveals Vogt to CNN Travel & Gastronomy .

A debutant in the competition, Milonga also won a gold medal with its Arbequina/Coratina cut and a silver medal with its Koroneiki varietal.

I was speechless, but at the same time I knew about the quality and potential of our olive oil.

The family brand was founded in 2019 in the pampas of Rio Grande do Sul and focuses on product quality with reduced production. And what is the process for an award-winning olive oil? Vogt comments the step by step:

“We use the fruits that are still extremely green, before they are ripe, and we harvest them quickly. The transport between the field and the mill has to be done in small boxes in a short time. We refrigerate the fruit so that its temperature does not rise on hot days, we process it as quickly as possible in a short mixer time and we use state-of-the-art equipment”.

The result from Arbequina is a smooth oil, “good for the Brazilian palate and with culinary harmonization”, says Vogt. Thus, according to the sommelier, winning the award is synonymous with authority and that the product has a lot of quality.

Since the results were released last weekend, orders have increased dramatically. Sold at R$50 on the brand’s website, the oils are already sold out and there are pre-sales of kits with the three award-winning oils.

“We are already restructuring ourselves and putting more people to help us in this dispatch and in the packaging of products to be able to handle so much demand”, reveals Chris Vogt.

Other Brazilian highlights

Milonga was not the only Brazilian brand awarded in the contest, which received more than 700 samples from different countries. Other national oils were also highlighted in the award, such as Prosperato seasoned with jalapeño pepper olive oil produced in Caçapava do Sul (RS), awarded in the “best international flavored” category.

THE Arbequina da Lagar H from Cachoeira do Sul (RS), was elected the “best monovarietal in the southern hemisphere” and the Arbequina/Arbosana blend from Gabriel Rodrigues House from Porto Alegre (RS), won the distinction of “best international coupage in the southern hemisphere”, which indicates the mix of varietals.

Also highlighted were the Picual Orpheus produced in São Sebastião da Grama (SP), which took the “best olive oil in Brazil” in the categories by country, and the You knew Arbequina, from Santo Antônio do Pinhal (SP), who was awarded the special prize “Raul C. Castellani, best in South America”.
