Canada: Trinto political deal with NPD to rule by 2025

The Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trinto announced today the agreement reached between his Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party (NPD, left) to keep in power until 2025 the minority government he leads.

Trinto, who was re-elected for a third term in September, is the head of a minority government, whose life expectancy is initially 18 to 24 months. This agreement will allow him to avoid early elections.

“This support and confidence agreement is now in force and will run until the end of this parliament’s term in 2025,” the prime minister told a news conference.

The 50-year-old political leader, who has been in power since 2015, justified the agreement with parliament’s fourth party, explaining that it would allow the government to “operate with stability and predictability”.

“With so much instability around us, Canadians need stability.”

It is not a formal coalition as no NPD member will join the government, but the two parties will vote together in the House of Commons on new fiscal, environmental or even health and housing measures.

The NPD thus agrees to “support the government in matters of confidence and budget” to prevent the fall of the government, according to the announcement.

The vote on the federal budget, which is always a critical moment, will take place in the coming days in Ottawa.

“It is in the nature of politics to propose conflicting visions, but no one is taking advantage of the growing polarization and dysfunction of parliament that are preventing these results from being achieved for Canadians,” said NPD leader Jagmit Singh.

Interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen has denounced the “coalition”, which will have “catastrophic consequences for the Canadian economy” and proves that Trinto wants to “stay in power at all costs”.

The Canadian Prime Minister failed last September to regain a majority for his third term in the elections he had called.

The House of Commons has 338 members. The Liberals have 159 seats, the Conservatives 119, the federal bloc Québécois and the NPD 32 and 25 respectively. Two Green MPs and one independent are added.
