Chadwick Boseman refused to read the draft of ‘Black Panther 2’ before he died

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is conquering theaters. In addition to continuing the exciting story, the highly anticipated film of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU, for its acronym in English) provides Chadwick Boseman with an emotional tribute and a worthy farewell to the actor, who died unexpectedly.

The sudden death of Chadwick Boseman after losing his battle with cancer in 2020 changed all the previous plans that Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler had for the franchise. Black Panther. For him, one of them was to find a way to deal with the character of T’Challa that the actor played.

Over the years, rumors surfaced as to whether the vacant role would be cut from the script or whether Disney would find someone else to play the King of Wakanda. The answer is that the filmmaker chose the hardest option, the one that included the lovable Boseman, even though it meant letting T’Challa go.

With the premiere of black panther 2, this and new details of the filming process came to light. The most recent comes from Ryan Coogler himself, who revealed that Boseman refused to read the first draft of the 2018 sequel shortly before his death.

As part of the promotion of black panther 2, Recently, Coogler was at the Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcastpresented by Marvel Studios, where he discussed his last conversation with Boseman before his death.

Coogler said he called the actor to ask him to read the script for Black Panther 2, which I had just written. However, the filmmaker admitted that he felt something strange in the actor’s tone.

just finished [el guion]. My last conversation with him was when I called him to ask if he wanted to read it before he got study notes. That was the last time we spoke. He passed away a couple of weeks after I had finished. […] I was tired. I could tell that he was tired.

It is worth mentioning that after the actor’s death, Coogler had to develop a new script for the film without the presence of T’Challa, a version that hit theaters in Mexico and Latin America on November 10.

Through tears, the filmmaker continued talking about how he noticed something was wrong with his call, as he tried to convince Boseman to read his first version of the script, but the actor refused. However, Coogler later discovered that he was too weak to read the writing.

[Chadwick Boseman] He called me and I knew he was in bed while we were talking. simone [la prometida de Chadwick] she was with him and he left her because he didn’t want her to have any problems with the confidentiality agreement. And she didn’t want to leave him. So I knew something was up. […] Then he said he didn’t want to read [el guion] because he didn’t want to interfere with the ratings the studio might give. So she said that she would read it later. But later I discovered that he was too tired to read anything.

Coogler later also commented on how he received the news that Chadwick Boseman had passed away from colon cancer. At first, she thought it was a rumor or fake news. However, when he contacted his agents and Denzel Washington, who was one of the actor’s mentors in the film industry, he confirmed the unfortunate news.

The loss of Boseman shocked the entire world, especially after all the positive impact the actor had playing T’Challa. While Marvel decided not to hire another actor for the role, out of respect for Chadwick Boseman’s legacy, Wakanda Forever is a beautiful tribute to the artist who sadly left us too soon.
