Chamber approves text that provides free luggage clearance

The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved, this Tuesday (24), a text that provides for the free dispatch of luggage weighing up to 23 kilos on domestic flights, and 30 kilos on international trips.

The matter now goes for sanction or veto by the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The text is derived from the Provisional Measure (MP) that relaxes rules for the air sector, known as “MP for Simple Flight”. The MP was presented by the federal government at the end of last year, but needed to be approved by the National Congress so as not to lose its validity.

Originally, the MP did not provide for the return of free dispatch, but federal deputies included an amendment to provide for the measure when voting on the matter for the first time.

In the Senate, the rapporteur of the matter, Carlos Viana (PL-MG), who is deputy leader of the government in the House, tried to withdraw the return of gratuity, but the senators maintained this forecast, which was ratified today by the Chamber.

Authorization for the collection of checked bags was made official in 2017. The airlines claimed, at the time, that this would reduce the value of the tickets.

Currently, passengers can take up to 10 kilos of luggage in the cabin without paying an additional fee. Heavier bags are usually charged separately from the ticket price or through a higher fare.
