Climate activist Greta Thunberg is detained by police in Germany at coal mine protest

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested during a protest against the demolition of a coal mining village near the city of Luetzerath, Germany, this Tuesday (17), the affiliate of the CNN International N-TV.

Thunberg, 20, was protesting at the Garzweiler 2 open pit coal mine, about 9 kilometers from Luetzerath, where she sat with a group of protesters near the edge of the mine.

A spokesman for the Aachen police told Reuters that “she [Greta] was stopped and taken by us with this group out of the immediate danger area to verify its identity”, adding that an activist had jumped into the mine.

Also according to the spokesperson, it is not yet clear what will happen to Thunberg and the group detained with her. There is no information about the status of the activist who jumped into the mine.
