Four people died and three others were injured when a bridge collapsed in the Colombian city of Barranquilla on Friday (5/31). The tragic accident occurred when part of the structure, which leads from the city to the airport, collapsed, causing two vehicles and a motorcycle to fall into the void. “At the scene of the accident, three people died and one more ended up in the hospital,” police director Julio Olaya, head of the traffic department of Soledad municipality, where the airport is located, told Noticias Caracol television. “Apparently, the heavy rains caused the subsidence,” he added. “The most likely scenario is that what is left of the construction will also collapse,” warned the governor of the Atlantico region, Eduardo Verano, where the tragedy occurred. The Colombian government warns that the El Niño climate phenomenon will lead to a more intense than usual rainy season in 2024. Source: APE
