Court summons more than 30 people close to Trump in Capitol investigation

High-ranking officials from Donald Trump’s political fundraising campaign and the previous campaign operation are among dozens of people close to the former US president who have received grand jury subpoenas in recent days — as the Justice Department ramps up its efforts. criminal investigation relating to January 6, 2021, according to various sources familiar with the matter.

Among them are former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien and Sean Dollman, who worked for Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign as chief financial officer, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. CNN. Neither Stepien nor Dollman responded to requests for comment from the CNN.

Dan Scavino, Trump’s former deputy chief of staff, also recently received a subpoena, according to a source familiar with the matter. Scavino did not respond to a request for comment.

In total, more than 30 individuals with connections to Trump have received subpoenas in recent days, according to two sources familiar with the subpoenas’ targets. The subpoenas seek documents and, in some cases, testimony before a grand jury in Washington, DC.

The flurry of subpoenas and other investigative activities occurred in the days leading up to the start of the Justice Department’s standard pre-election silence period, a 60-day period before the midterm election, during which the department generally seeks to avoid action. overt investigations into politically sensitive investigations to avoid the appearance of trying to affect the election.

Some of the subpoenas, including one reviewed by the CNN, were broadly seeking information on a range of issues, including the fake election scheme, Trump’s primary political and fundraising vehicle Save America PAC, the organization of Trump’s January 6 rally, and any communications with a wide list of people who worked to overturn the 2020 election results.

The subpoena analyzed by the CNN searches for records related to compensation provided or received from a list of people that included Trump attorneys and campaign officials as of January 20, 2021.

It also asks for communications with anyone in the Department of Justice. Such as CNN previously reported, investigators are examining former DOJ attorney Jeffrey Clark’s role in promoting false allegations of election fraud on Trump’s behalf.

The subpoenas seek communications with some of the same actors previously identified in subpoenas who served false voters in several states earlier this year, including former Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Victoria Toensing and Boris Epshteyn, Trump’s 2020 campaign adviser, between others.

Some of the subpoenas also requested any information recipients had previously turned over to the House select committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.

Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner who worked with Giuliani to find evidence of voter fraud in the weeks following the 2020 election, also received a subpoena for documents and testimony, his attorney confirmed to CNN.

“I saw a lot of subpoenas. That looks very different because there’s no direction to it,” Kerik’s attorney Timothy Parlatore said. “It’s usually very targeted.”

Brian Jack, the last White House political director under Trump, was also subpoenaed, according to a family source. Jack did not respond to a request for comment.

Women for America First president Amy Kremer, who hosted Trump’s rally outside the White House, said in a tweet over the weekend that her group also received a broad subpoena. Her lawyer said the same publicly.
