Cyber security expert guesses Trump’s Twitter password

“I tweet therefore I am,” the US president could almost proclaim. With more than 87 million subscribers and tens of thousands of messages on the social network, Donald Trump has made Twitter a weapon of mass communication and a real marker of his mandate, distributing good points and acid criticism. A particularly prominent account whose security was apparently not up to par. As TechCrunch details, a security researcher indeed claims to have managed to briefly take control.

Dutch cybersecurity expert Victor Gevers claims this feat. He reportedly managed to gain access to the account after simply attempting to guess his password, succeeding in doing so on his fifth attempt. The chosen password? “Maga2020! »(Maga being the acronym of Make America Great Again, Donald Trump’s slogan since 2016). After entering the account of the occupant of the White House, he said he warned the branch in charge of cybersecurity within the Department of Homeland Security of the United States. The password for the Twitter account would then have been changed quickly.

A surprising lack of security

Note that this “piracy” has not been officially confirmed. Twitter claims to have seen “no information to corroborate this claim.” Officially, the President’s Twitter account is supposed to have additional protections. Above all, the social network normally offers two-factor authentication on accounts, which makes it possible to request a second proof of a user’s identity, through an SMS or an email for example. A precaution that seems natural for such an exposed account.

The most amazing? This is the second time that Victor Gevers has managed to access Donald Trump’s Twitter account. The first time, in 2016, he had resorted to a data breach at LinkedIn in which was a password used by the husband of Melania Trump. At the time, his password was “yourefired”, a phrase he used in his reality show The Apprentice.

This is a new twist in the tumultuous relationship between Donald Trump and Twitter. Just like Facebook, the social network founded by Jack Dorsey has blocked content or hidden messages from the president who, a few days before the election in which he will put his place back on the line, risks once again frantically tweeting the blue Bird.
