A whole weekend to spend between castles, fortresses, but also entire villages that tell the history of Italy and make it one of the most beautiful countries in the world: they are the National Days of Castles, by the Italian Institute of Castles, which this year return on 25 and 26 September.
They involve 19 Italian regions, in each of which one or more sites organize extraordinary openings for the public with guided tours and special events (sometimes even in streaming) such as concerts, book presentations, exhibitions, conferences tailor-made for families, enthusiasts, students.
These are events designed to make us discover architectures that deeply mark our landscape (they represent the second national asset after religious ones), the history of dynasties who have lived there (or who still live there) and therefore also of the socio-political changes in our country: one an integral part of the Italian historical-cultural identity that the Istituto Italiani dei Castelli undertakes to promote throughout the year also with educational activities aimed at schools, competitions, conferences.
«Every year with the National Days of the Castles we try to show places never seen before, or to rediscover them with new eyes. We inaugurate refurbished architectures or try to repopulate sites linked to the pressing topicality of our country », he says Fabio Pignatelli della Leonessa, architect, president of the Italian Castelli Institute. «This year – continues the president – we celebrate sites that combine exceptional historical and environmental value and for the first time our volunteers have designed a visit itinerary extended to the whole region – in some with tours including overnight – to increase the permanence of enthusiasts around the places we propose or continue with visits to other fortified architectures close to those chosen for the National Days of Castles 2021 ».
An example? Sardinia, where you can discover it Laconi, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy close to Barbagia, with a walk among the botanical wonders of the Aymerich Park, the castle of the same name which dates back to the 11th century and a dense network of events that go on throughout the weekend. But then there are many opportunities: for example in Abruzzo there will be many special visits to Navelli, fortified village at the gates of L’Aquila, in Calabria in the fortified citadel overlooking the sea of Roccella Jonica, in Emilia Romagna in the fifteenth-century Castle of Montechiarugolo which today is private property, in Campania in the village surrounded by Taurasi but also in the castles of Agropoli, Circello, Teano. In Lazio, the Temple, Palace and Archaeological Museum of Fortuna Primigenia in Palestrina (Rome) half owned by the Ministry of Culture and half still private residence.
