THE drought intensified in 15 states between June and July this year, according to the Drought Monitor released this Monday (2). In four other states, drought was again verified in July — all in the Northeast region: Alagoas, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe.
Only Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina did not record drought in July. In four other states and in the Federal District, the drought remained stable.

Monitoring showed that the North region had the most severe situation and recorded extreme drought. Between June and July, the phenomenon intensified in all five regions of Brazil and expanded into the territories of all regions in that period.
Eight states and the Federal District recorded drought in 100% of the territory in July of this year. They are: Acre, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Rondônia and Tocantins.
THE Amazonas leads total area with drought in July followed by Pará, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais and Bahia. In total, between June and July, the area with the phenomenon increased from 5.96 million to 7.04 million km², equivalent to 83% of Brazilian territory.
The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, declared a state of emergency and public health emergency in all 62 municipalities in Amazonas due to the drought, at the Drought Response Committee meeting last week.
The drought in Brazil between 2023 and 2024 is the “most intense in recent history”, according to the National Center for Monitoring Natural Disasters (Cemaden).
